Gary Mendenhall, VP for Central Region

The fall CCCAOE conference in Palm Springs will have a BASIC SKILLS focus.  Please let Gary know what you would like to see and if you are willing to present.  Email Sue

A quick link to the CTE section of the System Office Web site is needed on the CCCAOE Web site.

The Bay Area Regional Consortium is developing a statewide career guide.  Gary reminded all to check the www.training4me.com Web site to be sure it is current for their college.

Awards Nomination information will be disseminated before the end of the school year.  Gary encouraged all to submit nominations.

Stand-alone courses may now be approved by each college’s local curriculum committee.  A statewide committee will do training on this process

Contact illowskybarbara@deanza.edu for details.

The Workforce Leaders Institute is scheduled for April 18-20, 2007 at Lake Arrowhead.  A flyer for this institute is in the meeting packet.

System Office Reports

Teresa Parkison, EWD Division, announced that competitive grants are out for a Center for International Trade (CITD) and a Workplace Learning Resource Center.  A couple of Initiative Director grants are also posted.  Renewals will be out next week.

Jeanine Schoemer, CTE Division, announced that they are working on the online VTEA 1C application.  Jeanine provided the March CTE Update as a handout.

Tech Prep Consortium

Hazel Hill, Delta College

Hazel announced that Delta College was awarded funding to serve as the regional coordinator for the Tech Prep grant until June 2008.Nine regions were funded.  Their mission is to build career pathways.  They are looking for vertical and horizontal articulation in the areas of health, agriculture business, environmental technology, logistics, and distribution.  Articulation is from high school to college and from college to college.

Hazel needs each voc ed dean to send her the name for the person for their campus who has responsibility for Tech Prep.  She would like each tech prep consortium to be involved.

Hazel asked the region to consider scheduling time on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 (during the Annual Planning Retreat) to discuss Tech Prep issues in the region.

Regional Career Readiness Certificate

Gary Mendenhall and George Boodrookas

Gary stated that the idea of a regional career readiness certificate stemmed from the June 2006 planning retreat.  A work group was formed and has met via conference call several times to discuss issues.  Gary reviewed the work of this work group to date.  Ultimately, the certificate would go to the System Office for approval as a conjoint program.  (handout on Conjoint Programs provided)

George provided an overview of the WorkKeys Regional Initiative. (See Power Point slides.) The goal would be to align ourselves with each campus and business to offer a regional certificate.  Gary asked for audience input regarding the next steps in this process.

RESPONSES:

Hazel – Continue.  This would fit into the Regional Tech Prep.

Jose Luis – Lot of value

Janie Bundy – Very expensive.  She has used WorkKeys.  Employers do not know what it is.

George: Responded to Janie that employers are paying more attention now that there is a national certificate.

Deborah – Recommended bringing in math and English faculty and tying it into the Basic Skills Initiative

It was suggested that this topic be a possible agenda for the June retreat.

Next Meeting May 3, 2007 at Harris Ranch

Career Development for New Managers is one topic that was viewed as a priority for 2006-2007.   Gary asked if this topic was still what the group wanted for May 3rd.  He indicated that a call would go out to the region asking for a show of interest between Developing New Managers and the Regional Career Readiness Certificate.
