Working Lunch

Gary Mendenhall to provide a review of the Career Readiness Certificate and the work completed to date by the region work group.

12:45 p.m.

Building a Regional Career Ready Certificate

Work Session:  Identify common course titles and content

Discussed the creation a Regional RFA for conducting up to 14 job profiles.  Each campus would contribute $3,000 to fund the RFA.  The funds would be used to hire profilers (one for each campus) to conduct on profile.

 West Hills College – Stephanie Atkinson-Alston comments;

West Hills is looking at noncredit.  The college is supportive of regional certificate.

Fresno City College – Marilyn Meyer-Behringer.  It will be a challenge at FCC.  A lot is going on in the area of basic skills among academic faculty.  Vocational education is not included in the conversation.  If she tries to bring it in, she will have a fight.  Academics say, “This is our area.”

Gary Mendenhall: Question to Marilyn, “If there were a regional certificate, would that give you leverage?  Response:  That would be the best shot.  Marilyn sees the problem of where would it be housed.  Who would own it?  Is it going to be an academic math or English class?

Gary Mendenhall asked the question, “Do we have it in our hand?”  (Reference to the WorkKeys Target of Instruction handouts and the Modesto Junior College course outlines.

Hazel Hill:  Yes. Comment:    We have been doing a lot with basic skills.

Use the curriculum as it exists.  Put together a conjoint program.

Each college can determine if they want one or all of the three classes.

Conjoint Program would approve course title and content.

How long?  Leave it to school.

NOTE:  CHECK ON PERMISSIONS FROM WORK KEYS

COMMON TITLES:

Work ready certificate

Essential Skills for the Workplace

Applied Math for the Workplace

Reading for Information in the Workplace

Locating Information in the Workplace

Cross-link all courses

Make it the prefix for the major.

Show value of certificate to faculty.

Take the Certificate to the Region in June 2007 as a conjoint program.

Gary Mendenhall:

Discussed the concept of doing local profiling.  Each college would be asked to contribute $3K and then pick an area and contract with a person to do a specified number of areas.  The funding would be released as an RFA.

Hazel:  Can it be part of SB 70 grant?

Check on online profile (Scott Manes)

Judy Fisher has done profiling in Modesto.

Need to talk to George Boodrookas about profiling he has had done.

Check with Susan Scaffidi also.

Find out what has already been done.

Ask how many campuses would be interested in using a portion of next year’s VTEA funds to get a regional skill assessment in 14 different areas.  Send call to the Region to ask for names of possible profilers.  Profiler needs to be someone who has done it before.

Gary will ask George and Susan if profiles in three areas (target of instruction areas) exist.

Pick industry clusters to profile for industry information

Who is doing Work Keys profiling already?

At retreat, ask who will buy in to this concept and process.
