(Chancellor’s) Office Reports
Career
Technology Education |
Jeanine
Schoemer, Project Monitor for the Central Region Consortium, provided
two handouts, The CTE October 2006 Update and the Career Technical
Education Unit, October 2006 Report. She asked meeting participants
to review the October 11, 2006 memo from Jose Millan, Vice Chancellor,
on the subject on Payment of Perkins Allocations. There has been a
change in the reimbursement process. If quarterly reports are not
received by the System Office by the due date, colleges will have to
wait until the next quarter for their funding.

Economic
& Workforce Development Unit |
Teresa
Parkison, Specialist, provided EWD Program Update. She announced that
they are redoing the online data collection system and anticipate that
it will be up and working by
November 1, 2006. The EWD program also anticipates online
reporting for quarterly financial reports. |

Higher
Education & Workforce Development Work Group Action Plan Report
George
Boodrookas, Dean of Community & Economic Development, Modesto Junior
College, and Carole Goldsmith, Director, West Hills Community College
District, reported.

George
Boodrookas provided background on work group activities and stated
that objectives of the Work Group are vital to the
Central Valley.
He provided a copy of the Strategic Action Plan for each meeting
participant. In addition, George presented a letter the Work Group has
drafted to Governor Schwarzenegger. The letter applauds the
initiative taken by the Governor to establish the California
Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley and offers the support of the
community colleges in the Central Region. George asked the Region to
review the letter and to endorse it.
A MOTION
was made by Larry Dutto, Dean, College of the Sequoias, to support the
letter on behalf of the colleges of the Central Region Consortium.
Discussion followed. Harry Gossett commented that a letter from
separate groups might be more effective than one from the Central
Region.

Motion by Harry Gossett, Vice President, Merced College.
Unanimous
approval.

encouraged all to watch the activities of the Partnership.

Tech Prep
Regional Coordination Project RFA
Hazel
Hill, Dean, San Joaquin Delta College |
Dr. Hill
discussed San Joaquin Delta College’s intent to apply for the DOE Tech
Prep Grant. RFA specifications require only one application from each
region. Dr. Hill asked campuses to contact her with regard to the RFA.
Meeting participants indicated support for San Joaquin Delta College’s
application. George Boodrookas, Dean at
Modesto
Junior College, asked that Dr. Hill work with their campus Tech Prep
director. She agreed. |

Report:
BioScience Center, Gavilan College |
Sherrean
Carr announced that Karen Ackland is the new director for this
Center. Center goals include collaboration with the colleges in the
Region with the intent of building college programs.
Ms. Carr
stated that Fresno City College offers a BioTech course and that
Merced
College offers a comprehensive program. She needs to know what
assistance the colleges need. The Center can advertise the college
programs and provide supplies. |

Jeanette
Benson, Center Director, shared that a Business of Details video is
available to introduce international trade to college staff. She will
be making presentations in the future. Contact Jeanette if you would
like to request a presentation for you college. |

Excellence, Modesto Junior College |
George
Boodrookas said the first item of business is to ask what the colleges
need from the Center. He further stated that Modesto JC would hire a
contractor now to set up the Center. A permanent Director will be
hired in January 2007.
Dr. Hill
asked that the COE implement some of the ideas that came out of the
2005-2006 Industry Summits on construction and food manufacturing.
Jeanette
Benson asked for COE abstract and that the Center share current trends
and needs of business in the Region.
Larry
Dutto asked that a more developed search engine for the
www.trainine4me.com site be set in place. George indicated that
the COE grant could purchase the time of a Web person. |

CCCAOE
Board Report |
Gary
Mendenhall announced that the CCCAOE awards applications would be
posted to the web site by
Monday, October 23, 2006.
They are due
December 7, 2006.

Clark if you would like to nominate a legislator for an award.
Stand
Alone Approvals – Legislation passed and will be effective the end of
the year. (Stand Alone – does not belong to a certificate or degree
program)
Call for
Presentations for the Spring 2007 conference in Sacramento are DUE
DECEMBER 7, 2006. Spring conference will be
March
14-16, 2007.
The
Central Region would like to recommend a WorkKeys panel for the spring
conference. Panel members to include: George Boodrookas, Nancy
Stewart, and John Means. In addition, a WIB strand is being planned
for the Thursday of this conference.
The
Central Region will help host the spring conference. This means that
we will be asked to provide door prizes and workshop hosts.
Fall 2007
conference is planned for October 9-12, 2007 at the Doral Princess
Hotel in
Palm Springs.
Gary
asked for recommendations for the SPLASH page.
Gary
announced the upcoming Workforce Leaders Institute at the UCLA
Conference Center at Lake Arrowhead. The conference brochure was made
available to all participants. |

WorkKeys
/ DACUM |
The
region’s
September 28, 2006
workshop was well attended. Attendees had asked that a follow-up
discussion occur on October 19, 2006. Gary Mendenhall asked for
region input on the WorkKeys concept.
George
Boodrookas stated that Modesto JC is in the process of asking their
curriculum committee for the acceptance of applied math and reading
for understanding courses. If courses pass curriculum, George would
like to share what they did and what was approved with the Region.
They are trying to create a model similar to the once that was
approved statewide for retail management several years ago.
Hazel
Hill asked that we look at WorkKeys in curriculum for both short-term
and non-credit courses. George Boodrookas stated that several
colleges are already moving in that direction.
Larry
Dutto asked that the Region get together. He asked that we have a
profiler for each campus at the June Planning Retreat. Conversation
should start with Work Ready Certificate. Committee formed.

Discovery
SLO Gold! Student Learning Outcomes Showcase
March 9-10, 2007

Gary
Mendenhall stated that a region meeting devoted to SLOs was one of the
priorities for the region in 2006-2007. Discussion followed.
Participants asked teams to include academic faculty. Meeting will
include sharing and training on assessment.
Gary
shared two books that he is using at
Columbia
College. (Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College
Teachers AND Developing a Professional Teaching Portfolio: A Guide
for Success. A copy of each book will be provided to each college in
attendance at the
March 9-10, 2007 meeting.
The
Consortium Office is working to put together a Friday/Saturday meeting
that would allow for travel time to the area and give people plenty to
explore during their free time. |

Populations Workshop

Sue
Clark, JSPAC Co-Chair, provided handout and reviewed content for
2006-2007 JSPAC workshops. She indicated that one workshop was
available to our region at no cost and asked administrators to contact
her if interested in scheduling the workshop at their college. |

Professional Leadership Development Funds |
Sue Clark
provided handout detailing the process for colleges to apply for, and
receive, a maximum of $1,000 in funds to support the development of
leadership.
This year
the Consortium office is requiring additional reporting from colleges
receiving the funds. A mid-year and end of year report form will be
required. The form will be emailed to the lead vocational education
administrator, and the form must be returned to the Consortium office
by the due date. The Consortium Office will monitor this process to
ensure accountability for reporting purposes and to make the process
simple for the colleges. Contact Sue Clark to receive instructions
for requesting these funds. Deadline to request is January 26, 2007. |

Post
cards to promote the Web site were distributed. Colleges were
encouraged to distribute the cards to business and industry. As
colleges participate in Job/Career Fairs, contact the Consortium
Office for additional cards. |
