Mendenhall reviewed Career Pathways discussion
that took place during the June 2007 planning
retreat. Discussion focused on creating a
structure as a pilot that we could develop as we
learn and grow. This structure would be a
Career Pathways Web site link.
First, we need to identify
Career Pathways in the Central Region. Each
college would be assigned a Pathway for the
project by providing a model curriculum, forms
and articulation agreement. Pilots would be
available to review on October 11, 2007 during
region meeting. Gary stated that he and Sue
would bring together a pilot Web site to show how
this would work.
Discussion focused on naming
(and placing) a button on the home page of the
Central Region Consortium Web site. Hazel
suggested Career Pathways. George stated
that the term should be understood by business.
Target users are:
counselors, parents, students, other colleges,
and faculty. Human Resources staff could be
potential users. We need to use names and
titles that are user friendly to all
of these groups.
Gary asked what we need to
do with the existing Web site structure and
referenced the www.training4me.com
text. We would need to define TOP codes,
OES codes. Sue and Gary will check with
industry for definitions of the terms they
use. NAICS (occupational categories) list
is broken into subgroups (jobs and job tasks).
USE these to create a
crosswalk:
IPEDS (high school)
TOP (community college)
NAICS (industry)
Alpha codes
CIT (national) NCES is
national crosswalk.
Sue will research codes to
determine end user for each of the codes.
Gary asked the following
questions:
WHAT IS THE CONTENT PLACED
ON THE WEB SITE?
STRUCTURE: HOW DO YOU
FLOW THRU THIS PROCESS
WHAT KIND OF ELECTRONIC
FORMAT DO WE WANT TO USE? WHAT ARE THE
PARAMETERS?
How do you see each college?
Do we want a section where
we identify the high schools that have
articulation agreements?
Delta will submit a model
curriculum pathway and forms for media
entertainment.
Hazel: We dont
want to get to the high schools yet, but we do
want to get to the community colleges. I
should be able to have a matrix about AJ in our
region.
We want to capitalize on
college programs that have expertise.
Larry Dutto commented that
there are 2.7 billion Internet searches every
month and that there are 1.2 million sites listed
as career pathways.
Key is to how you advertise
your link.
Sue commented that the www.training4me.com
Web site is an easier sell for advertising.
The Consortium Web site is an in
house to promote what is going on in the
Central Region and its colleges.
Response: Good
point. The training4me site makes more
sense as the site where we should establish the
links. It would make more sense for
industry and other audiences previously
mentioned.
Attention turned to the
Career Pathways Web site hosted by State Center
CCD. Many of the components of the model we
are envisioning seem to exist on this site.
Participants on this call asked if SCCCD would
want to partner with us. Site address is http://www.statecenter.com/ccpc/)
George questions if Terry
Bradshaw of SCCCD would want to connect with us
some formal way? We wouldnt have to
reinvent the wheel.
Gary: Maybe our first
step is to get hold of them.
LARRY DUTTO will talk to
Terry at SCCCD. Larry will do investigation
and email group.
Question: DO WE WANT TO HAVE
PROGRAMS OF STUDY ALIGN WITH CDE PROGRAMS OF
STUDY ?
Gary reviewed next steps:
Larry will contact folks,
email Sue and Sue to email group.
Our colleges still need to
get their materials together.
Before we go out, we need to
say, Here are the key elements and this is
what we have and format we need.
