TOPIC DISCUSSION FOLLOW-UP
Location for Workshop and Date(s) Marilyn has contacted Bass Lake.  She provided information to the committee regarding costs, menus, and availability.

November 6-7, 2008 is not available.  She will contact Bass Lake again to ask if there is availability for Nov. 12-14, 2008.

Chalets are $99 per night.

Suites are $119 per night.

The committee decided to book suites, as those who have stayed at Bass Lake say they are much nicer – only $20 more.

Marilyn to contact Bass Lake immediately and notify committee about available dates in November.

She will ask for a block of 50 suites, meeting rooms, and meals, as follows:

Wednesday, Nov. 12 – evening event to include opening keynote and dinner

Thursday, November 13 – Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Full day session

Friday – November 14 – Breakfast and lunch with meeting space until noon or 1 p.m.

Marilyn will also ask for room block rate for weekend.

Marilyn to contact Sue Clark with contact information.  Sue to set up contract with Bass Lake.  Attendees will be required to book and pay for their own rooms (same as with Monterey retreat at Hotel Pacific).

College Teams 5 people per team per college x 14 colleges in region = 70 maximum, plus additional presenters.

Title of Workshops Discussed possible titles.

Contextualized Basic Skills or Applied Contextual Academics?

Group decided on title of:

Applied Contextual Academics

WHO is target audience for this workshop? PEOPLE who are associated with basic skills initiative and CTE people related to applied contextual academics.

Basic Skills Initiative reps

CAA reps

Agenda Discussion Attendees arrive Wed afternoon to check-in.  Dinner in main dining hall with Keynote during dinner.

Thursday:

Have a rep from each college briefly report what they are doing in the topic area.

Bring in several experts (in and out of state) to share best models.

POSSIBILITIES:

  • IBEST Project in Washington State. They have some great stories, per Carole. (Carole will contact.)  They may have their own funding for travel.
  • UC Merced is doing a lot of research and contextual learning helping the academic side. (Carole)
  • Basic Skills Initiative People

Build in time between different sessions for college teams to meet and discuss.

Small groups to talk about strategies and projects and report on what those would be by college.

DISCUSSION NOTES:

Bring your basic skills team together with one key presenter - presentations by colleges that are doing things…housed within contextual learning format, breakout in teams and then report (old and/or new strategies)

Two report outs were suggested by Marilyn – what they are currently doing (10-15 minute talk) and then talk about what they have developed that is new as a result of this session.

Wed night – dinner with a keynote.  Start early Thursday following breakfast.

Friday with a wrap up / people share what they will take back with them.

See where people are at in beginning

Did they have a paradigm shift after hearing presenters?

We want more time with experts, speakers, model programs and some team time, but less of that and more from experts.

Teams might want to meet after dinner for further planning/discussion.

More presenters, or give presenters a longer period of time.

Hoover commission information to be presented?  This was discussed during retreat.

CAROLE AND MARILYN WILL LOOK FOR KEYNOTE and PRESENTERS.

When we send out the Save the Date notice, we will ask for a 5-person team from each college.

Marilyn and Carole will contact possible presenters.  If more are needed, we will announce to Region or make other contacts.  We will give this until our conference call on Sept. 5th.

Carole to contact IBEST Project and UC Merced for possible presenters and to obtain travel and presentation costs.

Marilyn will make contacts with people she knows who could be possible presenters.

Gary and Sue to draft an agenda and distribute it to committee to review and edit.

EXPENSES The Consortium will cover speakers, speakers’ travel, meals, meeting room space, equipment rentals, duplicating, and supplies.

No registration fee.  Colleges to cover travel and lodging expenses.

HANDOUTS Each campus team will bring their own handouts to share with group.
