Mission Program Goals and Objectives West Hills College Lemoore is seeking approval for the Sterile Processing Technician Preparation Program (SPT). The goals, objectives, and student learning outcomes are included in this proposal. Catalog Description: This comprehensive Sterile Processing Technician Program functions within the sterile processing industry, and adheres to local and county regulations that pertain to processing instruments, and equipment. This program prepares students to function as Sterile Processing Technicians. This program will include important practice and background information on basic concepts of asepsis, universal precautions, AIDS, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, sterile procedures for processing instruments, equipment and supplies for utilization in the operating room, in-house departments and clinics; this includes appropriate record keeping and distribution. Additionally, students will practice with equipment and perform hands on labs including introduction to the function and proper use of the autoclave machines, reprocessing of instrumentation and sterilization principles, universal precautions including decontamination, instrument preparation, and general sterilization. Students wishing to use this program toward a health degree or certificate must obtain a 77% or higher. Successful students will receive a Certificate of Completion and be eligible to sit for the IAHSCMM Exam for certification. Check with the Associate Dean of Vocational Education for guidelines in establishing valid requisites) Pre-requisites: · Physical Exam · TB clearance · MMR vaccine · Live Scan Background Clearance · Medical Malpractice insurance Advisories Strongly recommend preparation of: · HS 5 Medical Terminology · BIO 32 Human Anatomy · Math 101 · English 105B Courses HS 50 Sterile Processing Technician Preparation HS 50L Sterile Processing Technician Preparation Lab Justification for the new program: Local market research has shown that there is a need for this vocational program. At present, certification for this position is not nationally required, but in the near future this position will require national certification. There are already eastern states that require certification. Need Enrollment and Completion We will accept twenty eight students each semester. It is a one semester program. Students may repeat a course one time to be eligible to complete the program. The target retention rate is 95% with an 85% certification exam pass rate. Place of Program The SPT program will be part of the Health and Wellness learning area, and clinical experience will be at various medical facilities. Transferability The course is vocational and does not meet criteria for transfer. Program Evaluation Once the program is approved it will be added to the roster for review every two years. Feasibility · The library contains sufficient resources to support positive outcomes. The skills lab has 120 medical videos and CD programs. · We have a fully equipped nursing skills lab including surgical instruments, an autoclave, a laparoscopic endoscopy unit, and a computer area for technology assisted learning. · WHC currently employs three certified Sterile Processing Technicians who are qualified to teach this course. Compliance Model Curriculum The curriculum for this program is the current edition from the International Association of Healthcare Sterile Materials Management. HS 50 Sterile Processing Technician Preparation and HS 50L Sterile Processing Technician Preparation Lab curriculum packets are included with this proposal. Licensing All dues and certification for International Association of Healthcare Sterile Materials Management have been met. Student Selection Students who meet all of the minimum requirements will be admitted into the program. Should there be more candidates than seats; a lottery system for selection will be used. Fees The standard Community College fee schedule will be administered. The students will be responsible for the costs of health screening, background clearance, liability insurance, books, uniforms, testing, and CPR, transportation and certification exam fees. Skills and/or Knowledge - (Specific skills and/or knowledge a student must possess in order to be ready to begin the program) Students must be able to: · Tolerate sight of body fluids on equipment and instruments. · Read and write English at basic skills level. · Calculate math and count correctly. · Travel to all clinical sites via personal transportation.
